8th April 1981
In 1981, Max Stafford Clark of the English Stage Company commissioned Irish playwright Thomas Kilroy to undertake a translation of Anton Chekov's 'The Seagull' giving it an Irish setting. He saw obvious parallels with pre-revolutionary Russia and an Ireland with a largely peasant class dominated by an Anglo-Irish ascendancy and a society on the brink of change.
TP was asked to undertake the role of the family doctor in a production which he could easily describe as one of the most satisfying of his entire career.
A large ensemble cast was gathered including Anna Massey, Alan Rickman, Anton Lesser, Stuart Burge, Tony Rohr.
